The Birth Survey
By Tine Reese
May 19, 2009How did you choose a caregiver for your prenatal care and birth? Most women I know rely on referrals from friends and often do their own research to find the doctor or midwife who will respect their wishes and support them in the birth experience they desire. In doing that research, women and their partners should have access to accurate and transparent information about the health professionals in their area as well as extensive personal feedback from other women about their birth experiences.
That said, I was very excited to discover The Birth Survey through the Coalition for Improving Maternity Care (CIMS) web site. It is an on-going survey that asks women to give feedback about their birth experiences. Women’s responses about providers and facilities will be available on the website to other women in their communities to help them choose where and with whom to give birth. As they become available, the official facility-level intervention rates gathered from the state departments of health will be paired with the women’s survey responses to help families make their birthing decisions.
Though the project is still in its early development there are already reviews—including my own—for Spokane-area providers. If you have received prenatal care and given birth locally, please take 20 to 30 minutes of your time and complete The Birth Survey so that other women in our area will have access to information about our birth experiences that will help them choose the most appropriate and best care providers.
