Birth Educator Cara Wright Interview
By Tine Reese
July 3, 2009
I had the opportunity yesterday morning to meet with Cara Wright. She is a pre- and post-natal yoga instructor and birth educator at Harmony Yoga in Spokane as well as a doula working with expectant mothers and fathers in our community. She is truly a lovely person—very well versed in all things related to pregnancy and birth—and her devotion to working with pregnant women and their partners is undeniable when you hear her speak about natural birth education.
Among the highlights of our conversation was Cara’s story about how many fathers-to-be say they don’t want to have a doula present during birth. They simply don’t see the value in having a doula or are uncomfortable with the thought of having someone else in the delivery room. In discussing the benefits of having a doula, she likens attempting natural childbirth without one to traveling in a foreign country without a tour guide. Without a tour guide you don’t know where you’re going or what to expect, often getting lost, becoming frustrated and perhaps even giving up on the journey you had so looked forward to. With the help of a knowledgeable tour guide you would be able to relax and focus on the things you had come to experience.
While Cara talked about teaching prenatal yoga, she explained how the main goal of her classes is to raise the level of consciousness about pregnancy, birth and parenting among her students. She stresses that there is no one “right way” to give birth and that each person must learn as much as possible about the physiology of pregnancy and birth, be conscious of their own and their baby’s needs and make the right decision for their family.
Cara has agreed to be a contributing blogger on Bloom and I look forward to sharing her first article with you very soon. I will leave you with a few of Cara’s favorite natural birth websites that she recommends to her students.
