Pediatric House Calls
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Brenda Stoudt, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) who makes house calls in the greater Spokane area. Having given birth to her own children at home, she understands the needs of home-birth families who wish to remain at home after the birth of their babies rather than running to a doctors office for newborn checkups. As well, she is a lactation counselor who works with moms and babies to ensure successful breastfeeding is established.
Beyond the newborn phase, Brenda provides preventative care and makes sick calls for children of all ages within the comfort of your home. What’s best…these house calls are not any more expensive than the average visit to a doctors office and can be covered by your health insurance. [...]
Introduction to Pregnancy Class
If you are thinking about trying to conceive or are newly pregnant, you might be interested in a new introduction to pregnancy class being offered in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area. Starting Your Birth Journey will help you make sense of the overwhelming amount of information you’ll encounter as an expectant parent and think through critical decisions you’ll have to make regarding your health and that of your new baby. Which books should you read? Where will you give birth? Breast or bottle? You can see there are a lot of things to consider that you have likely not given much thought to up until now. [...]
Pregnancy Nutrition: Healthy Eating for Two
There are so many rules for eating while you’re pregnant. No soft cheese. No fish high in mercury. No undercooked meat. You’ve probably read the list again and again in an effort to keep your unborn baby from harm. And remember when you found out you were pregnant and thought, “Oh good, now I can eat whatever I want for the first time in my life!?” I do. But as it turns out, this is the one time in your life when it pays to eat even healthier than you did before you got pregnant.
Well, what exactly are you supposed to eat and not eat while you’re pregnant? I have done the research and eaten my way through two pregnancies, so hopefully you find this information helpful. Of course, you should discuss nutrition with your prenatal care provider, especially if you have a medical condition that requires special attention to your diet. [...]
Why Use Cloth Diapers?

Cloth diapers are the healthiest choice both for your baby and for the environment. They are also cheaper than disposables and easier than ever to use. Gone are the days of flat, bulky cloth diapers that have to be folded, pinned and covered with plastic pants. Today there are cloth diapers that are elasticized so that they are fitted and snug, waterproof in many instances, breathable, and manageable with velcro-like closures or snaps. I have tried both prefolds with covers as well as all-in-ones (diaper and cover combined) and can say that the latter is a great choice for making cloth diapering a simple task…something reluctant users will appreciate. Our Local Hospital C-Section Rates
2008 Washington State Hospital Cesarean Birth Rates
The data on this website is compiled from the Washington State Department of Health comparison of 33 hospital’s cesarean rates based on their reported complicated delivery rate. Interestingly enough, the hospitals with the highest cesarean rates aren’t always the hospitals with the highest percentage of complicated deliveries. Here’s how our local hospitals stacked up against each other. Click on the link above to see how Spokane-area hospitals compare to other hospitals state wide. [...]
