Pediatric House Calls
By Tine Reese
November 18, 2009
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Brenda Stoudt, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) who makes house calls in the greater Spokane area. Having given birth to her own children at home, she understands the needs of home-birth families who wish to remain at home after the birth of their babies rather than running to a doctors office for newborn checkups. As well, she is a lactation counselor who works with moms and babies to ensure successful breastfeeding is established.
Beyond the newborn phase, Brenda provides preventative care and makes sick calls for children of all ages within the comfort of your home. What’s best…these house calls are not any more expensive than the average visit to a doctors office and can be covered by your health insurance.
House Call Benefits
- Health care in the comfort of your home
- No long waits in a waiting room
- No germ exposure
- Easy flexible schedule
- Evening/weekend appointments available
Preventative Care for Newborns
Comprehensive health care begins when your child is born. Your child will benefit from the early care that a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner can offer. The PNP is at your home within 24 to 48 hours of birth to ensure that your newborn is transitioning well, feedings are well established, and answers to any immediate questions are available. Following the newborn period, visits are made to ensure successful breast feeding, monitor weight gain, evaluate for jaundice, while continuing to support your family in the transition to gaining your new family member.
Preventative Care for Infants and Beyond
The PNP provides a comprehensive history and physical in your home at regular intervals. The mother and child experience the comfort and convenience of their own home, while avoiding exposure to unnecessary germs or long waits in the waiting room. A relationship between the family and the PNP grows as they spend time together discussing nutrition, development, safety, and concerns that the parents may have.
Sick Visits
The PNP is available for sick visits and can order labs, make referrals to specialists, and write any necessary prescriptions.
Brenda has been practicing pediatrics for over 25 years. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley and her Master’s degree in Nursing with an emphasis in Pediatrics from Yale University. Brenda is a nationally certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner as well as a lactation counselor.
She began her career at Children’s Hospital in Orange County, California then moved to Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. After 10 years in community medicine, Brenda transitioned to a private practice setting for an additional 10 years before starting her first house-calls practice in 2004. Brenda now resides in Nine Mile Falls, WA with her husband and three children. Her desire is to bring her experience to the Inland Northwest to serve the people of the greater Spokane area in the comfort of their own homes.
