If I Had Only Known…my Top 5 Pregnancy Annoyances

By Tyana Kelley

Before I got pregnant with my twins, I considered myself to be pretty knowledgeable about pregnancy and childbirth. I am a birth doula, and grew up with lots of pregnant women around me. So when I started experiencing things that no one had ever told me about, I was a bit peeved. Aren’t women supposed to share these tidbits witheach other so it’s not a big surprise and we can cope better through this already trying time in our lives? I know that everyone’s pregnancy is different, but come on; share the info already! So here goes, ladies…the top five annoyances from my pregnancy that no one warned me about.

#5: I lost pigment in the skin on my face.

Weird right? Just this one little spot below my right eye. I’ve had friends tell me that I missed blending some foundation on my face, but no, it’s just my skin. I asked mydoctor about it, and she said that it’s just a weird pregnancy thing for me. Great. Pigment gone forever.Lovely.

#4: My feet didn’t grow.

I worked at Lady Foot Locker for 2 years during college, and encountered countless women who had gone through pregnancy to find that they no longer had any shoes that fit.I would measure their feet, and find that their feet had grown a half to full size during their pregnancy. Now, I’m sure a lot of you are thinking, “What is she complaining about? I didn’t want my feet to grow.”Well, I did. I was counting on it, actually. I wear a 10.5 AA, and most shoes stop making half sizes at 10. Plus a little extra width would have been nice. I would love to walk into any shoe store and find a pair that fit, but I am stuck shopping mainly at specialty stores, where they carry shoes for my crazy feet, for a nice premium price.

#3: I got crazy stretch marks.

I know; I know…I had twins. Of course I was going to have a lot of stretch marks, but I had never really seen a belly with a lot of stretch marks before. I had seen women with a few, and heard the random complaints of “I have one stretch mark that I’d really like to get rid of.” Boy, I’d like to kill those women now. When I had my belly henna done, I was worried that it wouldn’t stick because my belly seemed to be a solid stretch mark. So best to mentally prepare for a lot and only get a few than the other way around.

#2: When I went out in the cold, my nipples hurt so much!

It was winter during most of my pregnancy; so basically, whenever I went outside I wanted to cry, my nipples hurt so badly. I know that this may be TMI, but I wished over and overthat someone would have warned my about this, so I warn as many of my friends as I can. This was one of the worst pregnancy “things” I had.

#1: Dry mouth!

This was by far the most annoying pregnancy induced problem I dealt with. You know when you wake up in the morning with that bit of dry mouth film on your lips? Well, I had that all day long. I normally have an abundance of saliva, so having none was quite a change. It didn’t matter how much water I drank or how much Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (which I keep at hand all the time) I used, my mouth was always dry, and my lips were always cracked. Not to mention that it was winter, which is already super dry in Spokane. This was also the symptom that I couldn’t believe more women didn’t warn me about. I can’t be the first person to deal with this. Or is it one of those things that once it’s over we quickly forget about? Either way, I thought you should know.

So there you have it. My list of top pregnancy annoyances. I hope that you don’t get all of these, but at least you’ve been warned. Let me know if you had different symptoms that annoyed (or are annoying) you. It’s best that wekeep this list going.

EW. Oh god… Mouth film?! ALL DAY LONG? I was prepared for random pains, stretch marks… You have successfully changed my mind about wanting children, all in one post. Thank you, TYana.

I was so excited to get the glow and have beautiful, flowing hair…….I got acne and greasy locks! I had morning sickness that was unbearable, nothing people suggested worked and it didn’t go away until mid second trimester. Every morning I would wake up to hips that felt like they were broken, and that was even with a pillow between them. But, even with all this, I still loved being pregnant!

Sore nipples! I had a winter pregnancy / spring birth and thtat was one of the worst things for me too! The things we learn. :)
