Finding Friends & Support as a New Mother
We live in a world where families are separated by distance: some are voluntary, some are not. Some distances are small; some distances are thousands and thousands of miles. Whatever the case may be, you don’t realize how far the distance is until you have a child in a town where you don’t know very many people….and realize you are all alone.
I am no different. I grew up in New Jersey, and that is where my entire family still lives. Seven years ago, I moved to California (to have some youthful fun in the sun ☺ ), and I never really thought about whether I would stay 3,000 miles away from my family and friends, or if I would go back. Soon after I moved there, however, the choice was made for me when I met the man who would be my husband. After three years there, we moved here to Spokane and two and half years later I was pregnant. [...]

This event is sure to have us shedding a few tears and rolling in the aisles. Come be a part of this local celebration of motherhood, in all of its many guises. [...]
Dunstan Baby Language Classes
APRIL 11, 2011
Spokane parents have an exciting new way to learn to understand the language of their newborn babies. Marcia Clement, a Dunstan Baby Language educator and mother of five, recently moved to Spokane with her family and is teaching classes for expectant parents. Some of our Bloom Spokane leaders met Marcia at Baby Fair last month and had the chance to learn more about this method of interpreting babies’ “owhs” and “ehs.” We think you’ll find it a valuable tool to have in your bag-o-tricks during those early days with a newborn. [...]

Spokane Breastfeeding Support Groups
JANUARY 8, 2011
Now is a wonderful time to be a breastfeeding mother. I have discovered that in Spokane there are breastfeeding support groups meeting five days a week: Monday through Friday! No longer do women need to feel alone. You don’t have to feed your baby an emergency formula bottle because you are worried that she’s not getting enough milk. You can get the breastfeeding support you need from one of our local support groups.
What Happens When A Child Dies?
DECEMBER 4, 2010
It’s not a comfortable subject to talk about. The death of a child is my own personal worst nightmare. How would I go on living? Or breathing? But amazingly enough, people do learn how to breathe again, though their lives are never the same.
I recently met Sarah Bain, a mother of four living in Spokane, WA. As we talked about our own birth stories (which I’m often prone to do), she said that she had had one hospital birth, one home birth, one stillbirth and one car birth. I’m floored. Hearing the word stillbirth, a wave of utter sadness washes over me. I express my condolences for her loss and my amazement at the sheer variety of births she has experienced. She goes on to tell me that she is one of the facilitators of the local Infant Death Support Group in Spokane and has written articles on the topic for national publications. [...]
